Every December someone asks me the same question at the counter: "What do I get a kid who's into cars, or space, or drones, and I don't want to blow it?" Fair. The worst hobby gift is the one that needs three more purchases before it works on Christmas morning.
So this guide is sorted by budget, and every pick is something the maker says comes ready to go, or close to it. Prices are Atlanta Hobby's prices at the time of writing, and the specs come from the manufacturers' own pages.
The Short Answer
Under $50, grab the Celestron UpClose G2 8x21 binoculars ($22.95). Under $100, the Axial SCX30 Jeep Wrangler ($99.99) is the best complete RC gift, and the Rage AeroBoard ($59.99) is a fun first drone. From $100 to $250, pick the SCX24 Dodge Power Wagon or the Losi Mini LMT. Over $250, the Sky-Watcher Heritage 130 telescope ($305) is a real telescope that fits on a table.
- The SCX30 Jeep includes the battery, USB charger and radio batteries; Axial says nothing else is required.
- Every RC pick here runs on a small 2S LiPo, so plan on adult help with charging.
- Read the age guidance on the box. The CPSC asks gift buyers to follow it.
- For a science-minded 10-year-old, a rocket starter set or binoculars are easy wins.
1. Gifts Under $100
This is where most hobby gifts land, and there are great options that don't need anything else in the box.
Under $50: Celestron UpClose G2 8x21 binoculars
At $22.95, these are the stocking stuffer I'd buy for any kid or grown-up who likes being outside. Celestron lists 8x magnification, 21mm lenses and an 8 oz weight, with a water-resistant, rubber-covered aluminum body and a soft case and neck strap in the box. They focus as close as 10 feet, so they work for birds in the yard as well as the next ballgame.
Best RC gift under $100: Axial SCX30 Jeep Wrangler JLU
The SCX30 Jeep Wrangler is $99.99 and it's complete. Axial's product page lists a Spektrum 2S 160mAh LiPo, a USB charger, the Spektrum SLT2 2.4GHz radio and the four AA batteries for it, and says it's "ready to run, nothing else required." It's a 1/30-scale crawler with an officially licensed Jeep body, so it's happiest climbing over books, couch cushions and backyard rocks. Read our SCX24 vs SCX30 vs SCX10 III guide if you're torn on size.
A first drone: Rage R/C AeroBoard
The Rage AeroBoard is $59.99 and flies like a tiny hoverboard with a rider on top. Rage's spec sheet lists a 380mAh LiPo, a USB charger, a 4-channel 2.4GHz transmitter and flight times up to 7 minutes. It's about 4.7 inches tall. Before it flies outside, read our guide to drones for kids and teens for the rules that apply.
2. Gifts from $100 to $250
This tier buys more detail and more toughness. Both picks below come with a battery, charger and radio.
For the scale fan: Axial SCX24 1940s Dodge Power Wagon
The SCX24 Dodge Power Wagon is $159.99. Axial's page lists a 9.65-inch (245mm) length, oil-filled shocks, Pro-Line Interco Super Swamper tires on bead-lock wheels, an overlanding rack, and a water-resistant build. In the box: a 2S 350mAh LiPo, a USB LiPo charger, the SLT2 radio and its AA batteries. It's a shelf model that drives.
For the basher: Losi Mini LMT Sparkle Smash
The Mini LMT Sparkle Smash is $249.99. Losi's Mini LMT platform is a 1/18-scale, 4WD solid-axle monster truck with a four-link suspension, metal front and rear differentials, LED headlights and a wheelie bar, according to RC Car Action. It ships with a Spektrum Smart G2 810mAh 2S LiPo, a USB-C charger and the SLT2 radio. If the person you're shopping for likes jumps more than rocks, this is the one.
Compare the RC picks

3. Telescopes and STEM Gifts
For the kid (or adult) who'd rather look up than drive, here's where to spend.
$250 and up: Sky-Watcher Heritage 130 tabletop Dobsonian
The Heritage 130 is $305, and it's the telescope I'd buy over any department-store scope. High Point Scientific's listing gives it a 130mm (5.12-inch) mirror, a 650mm focal length at f/5, and 25mm and 10mm eyepieces. Its truss tube collapses from 25 inches to 14.5 inches, and it sits on a tabletop mount you push by hand, so set it on a sturdy table or bench. See what you'll actually see through a beginner scope before you buy.
A science gift for a 10-year-old
Model rockets are hard to beat. Estes rates its Space2Inspire STEM Kit for ages 10 and up (under 12 with adult supervision). It's a beginner kit that comes with two engines, a launch pad and a launch controller, flies up to 450 feet, and needs plastic cement and fine sandpaper to build. Ask us in the store about what's on the shelf. Our first launch guide walks through launch day.
Gift-giving safety checklist
The Consumer Product Safety Commission's December 2025 holiday release gives a short list that fits hobby gifts well:
- Follow the age guidance and safety information on the packaging.
- Buy from stores and retailers you know and trust, and be wary of deals that look too cheap.
- Keep small parts away from children under 3.
- Throw away plastic wrap and packaging right after the gifts are opened.
For RC gifts, add one more of our own: charge LiPo batteries with the charger that came in the box, with an adult nearby. Our battery and charging guide covers the basics.
Conclusion
Match the gift to the person, then to the budget. Under $100, the SCX30 Jeep Wrangler is the safest bet because everything is in the box. Spend a little more for the detail of the SCX24 Dodge Power Wagon or the toughness of the Mini LMT. For a stargazer, the Heritage 130 is a real telescope that won't end up in a closet, and a pair of UpClose binoculars makes an easy stocking stuffer.
