Nothing humbles a pilot faster than a brand-new plane that won't bind, or worse, one that binds perfectly and then rolls left the instant it leaves your hand. Good news: almost every "my Spektrum plane is possessed" call we get comes down to the same handful of setup steps done out of order.

This is the order we use on the bench when we set up customer BNF (Bind-N-Fly) planes. It works for Horizon's BNF Basic airplanes and for adding an AS3X+ receiver like the AR631+ to a plane of your own. Your plane's manual is still the final word on control throws and settings, so keep it open next to you.

The Short Answer

To set up a Spektrum transmitter for a new BNF plane: update your transmitter firmware, create a new airplane model with the wing and tail type from the manual, set throttle cut, bind with the throttle low and sticks in the failsafe position, then confirm control directions before flying.

  • Forward Programming lets your transmitter edit the receiver's AS3X+ and SAFE settings directly. It needs a current Spektrum transmitter with updated firmware.
  • SAFE Select (bank and pitch limits plus self-leveling) is usually switched on or off at bind time or assigned to a switch. Check your plane's manual.
  • Always do a control-direction check and a range check before the first flight.

1. Before You Bind: Firmware, a Fresh Model and the Right Wing Type

Most binding headaches start here. Two minutes of prep saves a lot of confusion later.

Update your transmitter (and receiver, if needed)

AS3X+ receivers and Forward Programming rely on current firmware. Horizon notes that full feature access requires a Spektrum Gen 2 or newer transmitter and may require updating the transmitter or receiver. Update through Spektrum's updater or your radio's built-in method, then check Spektrum's compatibility notes for your receiver. A Spektrum TX/RX USB Programming Cable handles older radios and receiver updates.

Create a new model. Don't reuse your last plane.

Reusing an old model memory brings along old mixes, trims and dual rates. Create a fresh Airplane model, then set the wing type (normal, flaperon, dual aileron) and tail type (normal, V-tail, elevon) exactly as your manual lists. Name it after the plane so you don't fly the wrong memory next month.

Set throttle cut before anything else

Assign a throttle cut to a switch you'll never bump by accident. Brushless motors and props don't negotiate. Make this a habit on every model.

2. Binding and Failsafe: The 60 Seconds That Matter Most

Binding pairs the receiver to your transmitter and records your failsafe positions, so the details matter.

The bind sequence

  1. Transmitter off, throttle stick fully down, other sticks centered, throttle cut off.
  2. Put the receiver into bind mode (bind button or bind plug, depending on the receiver) and power the plane. The receiver LED flashes.
  3. Turn on the transmitter in bind mode and start the bind.
  4. Wait for the receiver light to go solid, then exit bind mode.

Some BNF planes use a specific switch position or bind procedure to enable SAFE Select. Follow the manual's bind instructions word for word, because that's often how SAFE gets turned on.

Failsafe: know what happens when the signal drops

Spektrum receivers set failsafe at bind time. Typically the throttle goes to its bound (low) position and the control surfaces either hold or go to preset positions, depending on the receiver and setup. Test it on the ground with the prop removed: turn off the transmitter and confirm the motor stops.

Control-direction check (do not skip this)

Hold the plane level and move each stick. Right aileron stick: right aileron goes up, left goes down. Up elevator: trailing edge goes up. Then tip the plane, and with AS3X active, the surfaces should move to resist the motion. If any correction goes the wrong way, stop and fix it before flying. A reversed gyro is the classic cause of an instant roll on launch.

3. Forward Programming: Tuning AS3X+ and SAFE from Your Transmitter

Forward Programming lets you read and change receiver settings right on your transmitter screen, with no laptop or downloaded files. Horizon highlights this as a key benefit for receivers like the AR637T+.

Where to find it

On current Spektrum radios it lives in the model's function or setup menu as Forward Programming. The receiver must be bound and powered for the menu to appear. Inside, you'll typically see options for gyro settings, SAFE settings, first-time setup and system setup.

First-time setup for your own planes

If you install an AS3X+ receiver in a plane that didn't come with one, run the receiver's first-time setup. It walks you through mounting orientation, assigning a gain channel and SAFE switch, and capturing your servo travel. On BNF planes, the receiver usually ships pre-tuned for that airframe. Leave those gains alone until you've flown it.

Gains, SAFE Select and Panic mode

  • Gain: if the plane oscillates (wags) at speed, gain is too high for that flight mode. Lower it in small steps.
  • SAFE Select: limits bank and pitch angles and self-levels when you release the sticks. It's great for learning.
  • Panic mode (on supported setups): a switch that levels the plane when you're disoriented. Assign it somewhere your finger naturally rests.

Want more room to practice without risking the airframe? A simulator like RealFlight lets you rehearse all of this on the couch first.

Before the first flight: range check and the rules

The AMA Safety Code calls for a radio range check on new or repaired models. Recreational flyers also need to pass the FAA's free TRUST test, register aircraft weighing 250 grams or more, and meet Remote ID requirements unless flying at an FAA-Recognized Identification Area (FRIA). Many AMA club fields are FRIAs. See the FAA recreational flyer page for the current rules.

Conclusion

Spektrum setup is simple if you do it in order: update, fresh model, throttle cut, bind with the sticks where they belong, verify every direction, then use Forward Programming for fine tuning. Follow that sequence and your new plane will fly the way it did for the engineers who tuned it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I bind a Spektrum BNF plane?

Create a new airplane model, set throttle cut, put the receiver in bind mode, power the plane, then start bind on the transmitter with the throttle low. Wait for a solid receiver light and follow your plane's manual for any SAFE-specific bind steps.

What is Spektrum Forward Programming?

It's a feature that displays a compatible receiver's settings on your transmitter so you can adjust AS3X+ gains, SAFE and setup options without a computer.

Why does my plane roll as soon as I launch it?

The most common causes are a reversed control or gyro direction, the wrong wing type in the transmitter, or trims carried over from an old model. Do a full direction check with AS3X active before every first flight.

Which transmitters support Forward Programming?

Current Spektrum NX and iX series transmitters with updated firmware support it. Check Spektrum's compatibility list for your radio and receiver.

What is the difference between AS3X and SAFE?

AS3X is gyro stabilization that smooths out wind and turbulence while you stay in full control. SAFE adds angle limits and self-leveling for learning and recovery.

Do I need to register my RC plane with the FAA?

Recreational flyers must register aircraft that weigh 250 grams or more, carry proof of passing TRUST, and follow Remote ID rules unless flying at a FRIA.
