Most RC cars leave the box with a radio set up for nobody in particular. The steering is twitchy at speed, the throttle trim was bumped in shipping, and nobody has ever checked what the car does when the transmitter battery dies. Five minutes with the radio fixes all three, and two of them make you faster.
This guide covers the two Spektrum pistol-grip radios most of our customers bring to the counter: the DX3 Smart, which we sell with an SR315 receiver, and the DX5 Pro 2021. They are programmed very differently, so each section covers both. Control and menu names follow Spektrum's manuals; always confirm against the manual for your firmware version.
The Short Answer
On a DX3 Smart, use the Steering Rate knob for steering throw, center the Throttle Trim, use the Throttle Limit switch for beginners, and set failsafe during binding; on a DX5 Pro, use the Rates and Exponential menus, keep trims centered, and set and test failsafe with the receiver.
- Dual rate limits total steering throw; expo softens response around center. The DX3 Smart has no expo; the DX5 Pro does.
- Throttle trim should stay centered; fix creep or brake drag by calibrating the ESC instead.
- Failsafe on Spektrum surface receivers is set at binding, so rebind after reversing a channel.
- Always test failsafe with the wheels off the ground before you drive.
1. Know Your Radio: DX3 Smart vs DX5 Pro
The two radios do the same core jobs in completely different ways. Here is how they compare, using Spektrum's DX3 Smart manual and the DX5 Pro 2021 product page.
| Feature | DX3 Smart (SPM2340) | DX5 Pro 2021 (SPM5025) |
|---|---|---|
| How you program it | Knobs, switches and power-on button combinations; no screen menus | SimpleScroll menus with a scroll wheel and screen |
| Dual rate / steering throw | Steering Rate knob sets the steering end point | Rates menu (reduces steering, throttle or brake travel) |
| Expo | Not available | Exponential menu |
| Throttle limiting | Throttle Limit switch: 50, 75 or 100% | Throttle rate in the Rates menu; up to five drive modes per model |
| Failsafe | Set at binding: Standard (SmartSafe) or Preset (Gas) Mode | Set at binding with the receiver; no separate failsafe menu |
| Telemetry | SMART battery level indicator with a Smart ESC and battery | Built-in telemetry and programmable vibe alerts |
| Model memory | Not specified in the manual | 250 models |
DX3 Smart: knobs, switches and power-on modes
The DX3 Smart has no menu screen. Steering Trim and Throttle Trim set the center points, the Steering Rate and Brake Rate knobs set end points, servo reversing switches flip each channel between N and R, and a Throttle Limit switch caps throttle at 50, 75 or 100%. Deeper settings use power-on combinations. Holding the steering wheel full right and the trigger at full brake while switching on enters End Point Adjustment Mode, and the power LED flashes blue.
DX5 Pro: SimpleScroll menus
The DX5 Pro uses a scroll wheel to move through menus and a click to select. Spektrum's DX5 Pro 2021 manual lists a Function List that includes Servo Setup (Travel, Sub-Trim, Reverse and Speed), Rates, Exponential, Bind/Frame Rate, Mixing, AVC, ABS, Traction, Trim Setup, Telemetry and Drive Mode Name. The 2021 version adds built-in telemetry, programmable vibe alerts and 250 model memories, according to Spektrum.
Where the Rugged+ fits
We also stock Spektrum's DX Rugged+, a 12-channel surface transmitter. Instead of a scroll wheel it uses a tap-style capacitive-touch control panel, and Spektrum lists built-in telemetry and AVC programming. The ideas in this guide apply, but navigation is different, so follow its own manual for button presses.

2. Steering: Dual Rate, Expo and End Points
Three settings decide how your steering feels. End points set how far the servo can travel without binding. Dual rate (or steering rate) scales how much of that travel you use. Expo changes how quickly the steering responds around center without changing total throw.
Set end points first
- Put the car on a stand with the wheels off the ground and switch on the radio, then the car.
- Center the steering trim and check that the wheels point straight. Adjust mechanically if they do not.
- DX3 Smart: enter End Point Adjustment Mode (wheel full right, trigger full brake, power on). Turn the wheel to each side and use the Steering Rate knob to set the end point; Spektrum lists 100% as default and 150% as the maximum.
- DX5 Pro: open Servo Setup in the Function List, choose Travel, and set each direction (default 100%, adjustable up to 150%).
- Stop just short of the mechanical stops, so the servo is not buzzing against them at full lock.
Dual rate: how much steering you get
On the DX3 Smart, the Steering Rate knob is your steering-throw control. On the DX5 Pro, use the Rates menu in the Function List. Lower rate is useful on a fast, flowing track or a high-grip surface where full lock just scrubs speed. Many racers set end points to full lock, then run a slightly reduced rate and turn it up on tight tracks.
Expo: softer around center
Expo makes small wheel movements produce smaller servo movements while still reaching full throw at the end of the wheel's travel. It calms a car that feels darty at high speed without taking away lock in hairpins. The DX5 Pro has an Exponential menu, and its manual describes selecting an on-the-fly (OTF) switch to activate it; the DX3 Smart does not have expo. Radios differ on whether a positive or negative value softens the center, so make a change, then watch the servo with small wheel inputs. If small inputs move the wheels less than before, you went the right way. Start with a small value and adjust after driving.
3. Throttle Trim, Throttle Limit and Failsafe
Throttle settings are about control and safety. Get them wrong and the car creeps on the stand, drags the brakes, or runs away when the radio loses signal.
Keep throttle trim centered
The DX3 Smart manual describes Throttle Trim as the throttle neutral adjustment, and its binding procedure starts with centering the throttle trim. Leave it there. If the car creeps forward or drags the brake with the trigger at rest, recalibrate the ESC to the radio's neutral, full throttle and full brake points using the ESC manual, rather than hiding the problem with trim.
Throttle limit for new drivers
The DX3 Smart's Throttle Limit switch caps output at 50, 75 or 100%, and Spektrum suggests 50 or 75% for less experienced drivers or small areas. On the DX5 Pro, lowering the throttle value in the Rates menu gives a similar cap; set it back when the driver is ready. It is the easiest way to hand a fast car to a kid without handing them a missile.
Set failsafe the Spektrum way
On Spektrum surface systems, failsafe is stored at binding. The DX3 Smart supports two modes. Standard Mode uses SmartSafe: if the signal is lost, throttle goes to its failsafe position and the other channels hold their last position. Preset (Gas) Mode sends every channel to a preset position. The SR315 receiver supports both. For a DX5 Pro 2021 with an SR2100, the manual has you hold the throttle in the failsafe position you want while binding and keep holding it until binding is complete; there is no separate failsafe menu. Either way, rebind after reversing a channel or changing failsafe positions, as the DX3 manual notes.
Test it before every new setup
- Wheels off the ground, car on a stand, body off.
- Give a little throttle so the wheels are spinning slowly.
- Switch off the transmitter.
- Confirm the throttle drops to neutral (or brake, if that is how you set it) and the wheels stop.
- If they keep spinning, unplug the battery, rebind with controls in the right positions, and test again.

Conclusion
A well-set radio makes any car easier to drive. Set end points so nothing binds, use steering rate to match the track, add expo on the DX5 Pro if the car feels nervous, keep throttle trim centered and calibrate the ESC instead, and bind with the controls where you want failsafe to land. Then test failsafe with the wheels in the air. It takes five minutes and could save a car, or a shin.

Does the Spektrum DX3 Smart have expo?
No. The DX3 Smart is programmed with knobs, switches and power-on modes, and its manual covers steering and brake end points, trims, servo reversing and throttle limit, but not expo. The DX5 Pro has an Exponential menu.
What is the difference between dual rate and expo?
Dual rate changes how much total steering throw you get. Expo changes how sensitive the steering is around center while still allowing full throw at the end of the wheel's travel.
How do I set failsafe on a Spektrum surface receiver?
Failsafe is set when you bind. Center the throttle trim, hold the controls in the positions you want, and bind. On a DX3 Smart with an SR315 you can choose Standard (SmartSafe) or Preset (Gas) Mode. Rebind if you reverse a channel.
Why does my car creep with the trigger at rest?
Usually the throttle trim has been moved or the ESC was never calibrated to the radio. Center the trim, then run the ESC's calibration procedure from its manual.
How many models does the DX5 Pro 2021 store?
Spektrum lists 250 model memories for the DX5 Pro 2021, plus up to five drive modes per model.
Should beginners use throttle limit?
Yes. On a DX3 Smart, Spektrum suggests 50 or 75% throttle limit for less experienced drivers or small areas. It is an easy way to make a fast car manageable while skills build.
