For years, a VEX robotics season worked like a well-tuned drivetrain: VEX Robotics made the parts and the games, the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation (RECF) ran the events, and families mostly never had to think about who did what. Then on May 10, 2026 the gears stopped meshing. VEX announced it had ended the relationship, RECF launched its own competition, and parents started asking us a question we never expected to hear at the class table: "Wait, which one are we signing up for?"
This guide sorts it out using what each organization has published as of October 2026. We are not taking sides in the dispute. Our in-store classes teach VEX hardware and VEXcode, and our job is to help your student land on a season that fits. Here is who runs what, what it costs, which events lead to which championship, and a step-by-step way to choose.
The Short Answer
Since May 10, 2026, official VEX Robotics competitions are run by VEX Robotics with the Global Robotics & Science Foundation (GRSF) and registered on events.vex.com, while RECF runs a separate program called RECF Robotics on RECFevents.org.
- Only events registered through events.vex.com lead to the VEX Robotics World Championship; RECF says its events do not qualify teams for it.
- RECF events lead to the RECF World Championship in St. Louis, April 27 to May 6, 2027.
- U.S. team fees for 2026-27: $200 on the VEX path and $175 on the RECF path.
- Your VEX robot works on both paths. Pick based on which championship your student is chasing and which events are near you.
1. What Happened Between VEX and RECF
Two organizations that used to be one ecosystem are now running two separate competition programs. Here is the sequence as each side has described it in public.
May 10, 2026: VEX ends the partnership
In an email to Event Partners dated May 10, 2026, signed by VEX co-founders Tony Norman and Bob Mimlitch and reposted on the VEX Forum, VEX said its competitions "will be administered by VEX Robotics in coordination with Global Robotics and Science Foundation" and that "RECF is no longer authorized to organize, administer, sanction, or represent VEX Robotics competitions in any capacity." The same email told partners that scheduled events should go ahead as normal.
Who the Global Robotics & Science Foundation is
GRSF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Greenville, Texas. Its FAQ calls it "the officially authorized nonprofit partner for VEX Robotics" and the exclusive pathway for teams trying to qualify for the VEX Robotics World Championship. If your student wants to play Override or Level Up and chase VEX Worlds, GRSF is now the support organization behind those events.
RECF launches RECF Robotics
RECF responded with a message to the community saying it "is no longer tied to one single product supplier," and on June 2, 2026 it introduced RECF Robotics as its official 2026-27 competition. RECF states plainly that its events involving VEX products "are not sanctioned by VEX Robotics, Inc." and do not qualify teams for the VEX Robotics World Championship.
What happened to money paid before the split
If you paid team registration on RobotEvents.com before May 10, 2026, RECF says it cannot help recover those funds and directs families to sales@vex.com or their bank. That is per RECF's own message; we have not seen VEX publish a separate refund policy, so contact VEX directly if this applies to you.
2. VEX Path vs RECF Path, Side by Side
Both programs run this season, both welcome school and community teams, and both accept the VEX robot you already own. The differences are in the games, the fees and, most importantly, the championship at the end.
| VEX path (VEX Robotics + Global Robotics & Science Foundation) | RECF path (RECF Robotics) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | VEX Robotics, with the Global Robotics & Science Foundation (GRSF) as its authorized nonprofit partner | Robotics Education & Competition Foundation (RECF) |
| 2026-27 games | VEX V5 Robotics Competition: Override; VEX IQ Robotics Competition: Level Up | RECF Engage (Tier Takeover v2.0), RECF Achieve and Inspire (Pinnacle v2.0) |
| Where you register | events.vex.com (existing logins and team numbers carry over) | RECFevents.org (team registration opened July 8, 2026) |
| U.S. team fee | $200 per team | $175 per team, no card processing fee |
| Hardware | VEX parts under the official game manual | Existing VEX equipment stays legal; Achieve adds student-designed 3D-printed parts |
| Season finale | 2027 VEX Robotics World Championship, Las Vegas Convention Center (dates not yet posted) | 2027 RECF World Championship, St. Louis, April 27 to May 6, 2027 |
The games are different now
On the VEX path, middle and high school V5 teams play Override (we broke it down in our Override game guide) and VEX IQ teams play Level Up. RECF's 2026-27 season updates list its own titles: RECF Engage plays Tier Takeover v2.0, while Achieve and Inspire play Pinnacle v2.0. Practicing for one does not mean you can show up and score in the other.
Hardware rules split, too
RECF says "your existing VEX Robotics equipment will remain legal for use in future seasons" and lets Achieve teams use student-designed 3D-printed parts that are documented in the engineering notebook. VEX events follow the official VEX game manual. If your team builds for both, design around the stricter rule set and keep the VEX-legal build as your baseline.
Two championships, two cities
The official VEX Worlds site lists the 20th VEX Robotics World Championship at the Las Vegas Convention Center; as of early October 2026 it shows no dates. RECF says it holds the St. Louis contract and has set its 2027 RECF World Championship for April 27 to May 6, 2027, with spot allocations released in January 2027.
How teams qualify
On the VEX path, Global Robotics says Signature Events, Championship Events and Multi-Region Spotlight Events qualify teams directly for VEX Worlds, and GRSF says U.S. qualifying wraps up in mid-March. On the RECF path, each RECF Signature Event qualifies 7 to 8 teams directly to its St. Louis championship.

3. How to Choose a Path for Your Team
Most families do not need to follow every twist of the dispute. They need to make one good registration decision before local events fill up. Work through it in this order.
A 5-step decision for parents and coaches
- Name the goal. If your student's dream is the VEX Robotics World Championship, register on events.vex.com. RECF events do not qualify for it.
- Check what is near you. Search both events.vex.com and RECFevents.org for tournaments within driving distance of north Georgia and compare dates against your school calendar.
- Ask your school or club first. Many school programs have already picked a path for 2026-27, and a team usually registers under its organization's account.
- Budget the full season. Add the team fee ($200 VEX or $175 RECF in the U.S.) to per-event registration and travel. Doing both paths means paying both fees.
- Pick a game and commit. Override and Pinnacle v2.0 reward different robots. A rookie team does better mastering one game than half-building for two.
Can a team do both?
RECF's FAQ says teams may register with either organization and "may also choose to compete in both." GRSF's FAQ does not address dual registration, so if you plan to do both, confirm with your GRSF Program Support Manager that nothing in your VEX registration conflicts.
What has not changed
The robot, the code and the skills are the same. A student who learns to build a reliable drivetrain and write a clean autonomous routine in VEXcode (start with our first autonomous in Python guide) is ready for either path. GRSF registration also includes VEXcode VR Virtual Skills, which is useful practice between meetings.

Conclusion
The split changed the paperwork, not the robotics. Official VEX competitions now run through VEX Robotics and the Global Robotics & Science Foundation on events.vex.com, with VEX Worlds in Las Vegas as the goal. RECF runs its own RECF Robotics program on RECFevents.org, with its own championship in St. Louis. Decide which championship matters to your student, check which events are close to home, and register once you have answered those two questions.
If you are still sorting it out, bring your questions to the shop. Frequently Asked Questions
Who runs VEX Robotics competitions now?
Since May 10, 2026, official VEX Robotics competitions are administered by VEX Robotics in coordination with the Global Robotics & Science Foundation, which calls itself VEX's officially authorized nonprofit partner. Teams register on events.vex.com.
Should my team register with VEX or RECF?
Register on events.vex.com if your goal is the VEX Robotics World Championship, because RECF events do not qualify for it. Register on RECFevents.org if you want to play RECF's games and aim for the RECF World Championship in St. Louis. Check which events are near you before deciding.
How much does team registration cost in 2026-27?
For U.S. teams, the Global Robotics & Science Foundation lists $200 per team on events.vex.com, and RECF lists $175 per team on RECFevents.org with no card processing fee. Individual events charge their own entry fees on top.
Can we use our existing VEX robot in RECF events?
Yes. RECF says existing VEX Robotics equipment remains legal in its programs, and RECF Achieve also allows student-designed 3D-printed parts documented in the engineering notebook. Those extra parts are not covered by VEX's game manual, so keep a VEX-legal build if you compete on both paths.
Where is VEX Worlds in 2027?
The official VEX Worlds site lists the 20th VEX Robotics World Championship at the Las Vegas Convention Center. As of early October 2026 it had not posted dates. The separate RECF World Championship is in St. Louis, April 27 to May 6, 2027.
Do Atlanta Hobby's VEX classes pick a side?
No. Our classes teach VEX building, engineering and VEXcode programming, which apply on either path. We can help parents understand the options; registration is done by your team with VEX or RECF directly.
